SINAG PAG-ASA Project Pledges to Light Up Evacuation Centers in Metro Manila and Beyond – Manila Bulletin

The Philippines is one of the most disaster-prone countries in Southeast Asia. For many years, the country has been hit by severe weather events such as typhoons and floods. This highlights the importance of evacuation centers that serve as temporary shelter for communities affected by disaster displacement.

With schools, community spaces and sports facilities often repurposed to provide people with respite from extreme weather events, many evacuation centers frequently encounter a problem: a lack of reliable lighting.

Inspired by the goal of bringing light and life to the world while spreading prosperity, through a partnership with the Asia Society for Social Improvement and Sustainable Transformation (ASSIST), Signify Foundation and Signify Philippines launched SINAG PAG-ASA. Launched on February 18, 2022, the project aimed to provide evacuation centers with access to solar and electric floodlights, light tubes and rechargeable bulbs for use in emergencies and crises.

Early beneficiaries include at least 63 evacuation centers in Metro Manila, Cavite and Batangas, with additional beneficiaries reaching through March. SINAG PAG-ASA contacted the Disaster Risk Reduction Management Offices (DRRMO) of the respective Local Government Units (LGUs) for distribution.

“Over the past five years, the Signify Foundation has worked to improve access to quality lighting for people who don’t have it – or who have limited and unhealthy lighting. By spreading light, we can create brighter lives for people, communities and our planet. We believe sustainable light can unlock new opportunities, improve quality of life and health, unlock education and empowerment, and drive economic development. said Yvonne Pan, country manager of Signify Philippines.

Signify Foundation and Signify Philippines along with ASSIST believe in the power of light to positively impact our world by working together. With Philips Lighting, a global market leader with proven expertise in the development, manufacture and application of innovative (LED) lighting solutions, their common goal aligns with this project as they seek to continue to unlock brighter lives and hopefully a better world.
