Rodriguez said in a statement on Thursday, May 5 that based on the session schedule, the House and Senate have only 12 days, including a weekend, to complete vote counting and declare the winning nominees for the presidential and vice-presidential.

“We hope we can complete the canvassing and declare the winners in this short time,” the Midnanao solon said. The campaign is the official tally of votes for a given election.

National and local elections will take place on Monday 9 May.

Both houses of Congress are due to meet again on May 23 and adjourn their third and final regular session on June 3. The solicitation of votes will take place during this period.

As in the past, in the interests of transparency, Rodriguez said a receiving transmission should be installed in the House so that Congress has an advance electronic copy of the election results.

“There should be a mechanism to expedite the sending of provincial and municipal results to Congress in the event of an unreasonable or suspicious delay,” Rodriguez said.

Rodriguez noted that the session of Congress as a canvassing body should be chaired by the Speaker of the House and the President of the Senate.

He said that since the president of the Senate, Vicente Sotto III, is a candidate for the vice-presidency, “we leave it to his discretion and judgment what to do.”
