No COVID-19 lockdown on my watch – Mayor Isko – Manila Bulletin
Presidential candidate and mayor of Manila, Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso, said Wednesday (April 27) that he would not impose a lockdown to prevent the spread of Covid-19 if elected as the country’s next president.
In an ambush interview, Domagoso said he believes imposing lockdowns only makes people’s lives miserable.
“Hindi ako maglo-lockdown (I will not impose confinement). Why? Two years is enough for us to understand Covid, that there is a cycle of surge, may pagtaas, may pagbaba. May paglakas, may paghina (it will rise and will go down and get stronger and weaker.) But what matters most is that we should prepare,” he said.
Domagoso reiterated that the economy must remain open or many Filipinos will lose their jobs and go hungry.
“We should come prepared and we should literally open up. We have to do it, kasi magugutom ang tao kapag walang trabaho (otherwise people will go hungry if they don’t have a job),” he said.
Domagoso also said the City of Manila’s COVID-19 response plan needs to be replicated in “tourist belts” or areas where there are a lot of tourists.
“We welcome tourists but they must follow health protocols like testing, vaccination. Tapos (So) we are learning to live with Covid-19 and get back to work safely,” he said.
He stressed the need for the government to prepare for worst-case scenarios and start building more hospitals and prioritizing life-saving drugs against the deadly disease.
Domagoso said he ran for the top job in the country to offer what he did in Manila, especially during the pandemic, which are replicable and scalable.
