Coca-Cola shares the real magic of Christmas with 600 OFW RISE beneficiaries

SINCE the start of the Covid-19 pandemic in early 2020, data from the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) shows that an estimated 800,000 OFWs – displaced and unemployed due to a global economic downturn – have returned in the Phillippines.

Workers whose remittances once contributed significantly to the national economy suddenly found themselves without a lifeline.

With the aim of helping OFWs to get back on their feet, the OWWA, the Ministry of Labor and Employment (DoLE) and Coca-Cola Philippines developed in 2020 the OFW Re-Integration through Skills and Entrepreneurship ( OFW RISE), which to date has benefited nearly 600 OFW returnees who wanted to become micro-entrepreneurs.

The OFW RISE program offers free online training in basic entrepreneurship and business idea development, available through the Authority for Technical Education and Skills Development (Tesda-TOP) online program. The December cohort of 600 completed the training with knowledge of the approved Business Model Canvas (BMC) and received assistance in obtaining loans.

Strengthening support and opportunities for returning OFWs

The partnership between Philippine government agencies – OWWA, DoLE, Tesda and the Philippine Trade Training Center (PTTC), an agency attached to the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) – and Coca-Cola enables OFW RISE participants to do business training and have access to subsistence grants and micro-finance loans to help them start their own businesses.

“With the OFW RISE program, we hope to give our balikbayans the opportunity to stay in the country for good and bring them closer to their families. With the training they have received and the financial support they have had access to, we hope they can be encouraged to start their micro and small businesses and continue to help strengthen the Philippine economy without leaving the country, ”said Tony del Rosario, President of Coca-Cola Philippines and Vice President of Operations franchise for the Asean and South Pacific-East Asia region unit.
